Archbishop Muheria Criticizes Govt for Ignoring Kenyans’ Struggles, Calls for Empathy in Policy-Making
In a powerful message to leaders, Nyeri Diocese Archbishop Anthony Muheria has voiced his concern over the government’s disconnect from the daily struggles of ordinary Kenyans. Speaking in Nyeri during the canonization mass of Father Joseph Aramano, Muheria condemned the government’s approach to policy-making, highlighting a lack of consideration for the nation’s most vulnerable.
“We are competing in showing power; our leaders are thinking way too much about their image and their future and not thinking about the image of the poor,” Archbishop Muheria stated, urging leaders to shift their focus from self-promotion to addressing the real needs of the people.
One policy particularly criticized by Muheria was the recent transition from the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) to the Social Health Authority (SHA), which he believes has complicated healthcare access for many Kenyans. “With the shift of NHIF to SHIF, we don’t seem to have had that thought of the sick, people who die because they can’t get services,” he remarked, underscoring how the changes have left citizens struggling to access essential health services.
Archbishop Muheria called on the government to adopt humility and empathy in its decision-making, reminding leaders to reflect on the impact of their policies on Kenyans’ lives. He emphasized that policies should prioritize public welfare over political image.
