“Calm Down! There Is No Competition Between Church and State” President Ruto
President William Ruto has urged unity between the church and the state, dismissing claims of rivalry. Speaking during an interdenominational church service at Kipsitet Primary School in Kericho County, Ruto emphasized the importance of collaboration and unity for Kenya’s prosperity.
The remarks follow heightened tensions after the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) criticized Ruto’s administration for unfulfilled promises, high taxation, and a lack of citizen engagement. In a November 14 statement, the bishops accused the government of promoting a “culture of lies” and neglecting key issues such as unemployment, education reforms, and health system transitions.
Ruto further reiterated the need for unity, stating, “This country cannot prosper on division; we have to be united. The church and the state must work together.”
The clash escalated when the Archbishop of Nairobi Archdiocese, Philip Anyolo, rejected Ruto’s donations to a church, citing concerns about the funds’ origin and the church’s independence. Ruto had previously pledged Ksh. 2 million for a parish priest’s residence in Soweto.
As the debate continues, Ruto’s call for harmony aims to ease tensions, underscoring the shared goal of national progress. Whether his appeal bridges the growing divide remains a question as both church leaders and state officials weigh their priorities.
