Fred Serenge Urges Greater Support for Grassroots Talent Development
Fred Serenge, a former Kenyan international and CAF instructor, has called on the Ministry of Sports to strengthen its support for grassroots talent development. Speaking on Tuesday, Serenge highlighted the challenges young athletes face, particularly during the transition from secondary school to university, where many promising talents are lost due to inadequate facilities and technical support.
“The ministry has made commendable investments, and as a country, we are on the right path,” Serenge noted. “But to truly harness this potential, we must ensure that players are well-equipped. You cannot impart skills effectively without the proper tools.”
He emphasized that while infrastructure such as training grounds and basic equipment like balls and cones is available, many players lack essential items such as football boots. “These are not just accessories; they are the core tools for players. Without them, we hinder their growth,” he added.
Serenge’s remarks underline the need for a holistic approach to nurturing young talent. Beyond physical infrastructure and coaching, the provision of basic gear is crucial for ensuring that young athletes can transition smoothly through different stages of their careers.
This call comes at a pivotal time when Kenya is making strides in sports development. By addressing these gaps, the country could create a robust pipeline of talent capable of competing on the global stage.
With proper investment in grassroots sports, Kenya has the potential to not only strengthen local leagues but also produce world-class athletes who can shine in international competitions. Serenge’s advocacy serves as a timely reminder of the critical steps needed to achieve this vision.
