Gachagua Urges Ruto to Continue Fight Against Illicit Alcohol, Calls for Unity in Leadership
In his first public appearance since being impeached as Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua made a passionate plea for President William Ruto and his successor, Professor Kithure Kindiki, to sustain efforts against illicit alcohol in the Mt. Kenya region. Speaking at a funeral service in Kirinyaga County, Gachagua expressed concerns that his ousting had led to a resurgence of illegal alcohol, which he had actively fought against during his tenure.
“I have begun witnessing a revival in the menace,” Gachagua said, noting that concerned residents from Mt. Kenya approached him about the return of harmful brews in their communities. Reflecting on his work over the past two years, he emphasized the urgency of protecting families from the damaging effects of illicit alcohol, saying, “Even if you do not want me, let the work continue to help our children.” He advised President Ruto to consider delegating the task to Kindiki, emphasizing that the fight should not wane regardless of political shifts.
Gachagua also sought forgiveness from Ruto, MPs, and other leaders, asking for understanding if his past actions had caused offense. His appeal for peace and reconciliation was seen as an effort to foster unity, especially in areas of Kenya prone to political tension, such as the Rift Valley. Gachagua’s statements highlighted a desire for collaboration and stability, particularly as Kindiki steps into his new role as Deputy President, marking a new phase for Kenya’s leadership.
By calling for continuity in combating illicit brews, Gachagua underscored the importance of prioritizing community well-being, regardless of who holds power. His appeal served as both a reminder of the work that remains and a message of healing and cooperation as Kenya moves forward.
