Gas Leak Disrupts KCSE Exams in Mombasa, Kisumu Centre Manager Arrested for Exam Leak
In a distressing turn of events, eight KCSE candidates at Makande Girls Secondary School in Mvita constituency, Mombasa, fainted on Thursday morning due to exposure to a mysterious gas leak. The incident occurred as 84 candidates prepared to sit for their Kiswahili paper, with eight students affected by a noxious gas suspected to have originated from nearby industrial sites.
Five of the affected students were hospitalized and later discharged, while the remaining candidates were relocated to Makupa Boys High School to continue their exams. A multi-agency team is currently investigating to determine the source of the gas. “The smell was everywhere; we were even forced to exit our homes in search of fresh air, but it was even worse outside,” said Rabia Obui, a resident of Makande.
Meanwhile, in Kisumu County, a centre manager at Menara Academy in Muhoroni was arrested after education officials found photographs of Wednesday’s Chemistry paper on his mobile phone. The suspect, identified as Evans Ochieng Owili, was detained at Chemelil police station following routine checks by education officers monitoring the KCSE exams.
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has been vigilant in its efforts to secure the integrity of the exams, with security heightened in centers nationwide to prevent irregularities.
