Government to Establish Attorney General Offices in 15 More Counties
Starting January 1, 2025, the Kenyan government will expand its services by opening Attorney General (AG) offices in 15 additional counties. The move aims to decentralize legal services, ensuring greater accessibility for citizens across the nation.
The new offices will offer a range of essential services, including civil litigation, marriage registration, public trustee duties, and national legal aid. The counties set to benefit from this initiative are Nyandarua, Narok, Tana River, Tharaka Nithi, Baringo, Trans Nzoia, Makueni, Lamu, Vihiga, Kajiado, Marsabit, Isiolo, Wajir, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Kiambu.
“The Office of the Attorney General and Department of Justice assures the public of its commitment to promoting good governance and upholding the rule of law through accessible public legal services,” a government statement emphasized.
This initiative aligns with Section 6 (3)(b) of the Attorney General Act, which mandates the establishment of regional AG offices where necessary. Cabinet approval for this expansion was secured on June 27, 2023, paving the way for the addition of these offices.
Currently, the AG’s office operates in 13 counties, including Malindi, Mombasa, Garissa, Machakos, Embu, Meru, Nyeri, Nakuru, Eldoret, Kisumu, Kakamega, Kisii, and Kericho. Once operational, the new offices will increase the total to 28 counties, enhancing service delivery and legal accessibility nationwide.
This bold step reflects the government’s dedication to strengthening governance structures and fostering inclusivity by bringing legal services closer to the people.
