Govt Imposes Total Ban on Farming, Grazing in Natural Forests
In a decisive move to safeguard Kenya’s natural resources, the government has announced an absolute ban on farming and grazing across all natural forests. This policy, aimed at halting deforestation and promoting sustainable environmental practices, was declared by Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale.
“We must protect our natural forests for the benefit of future generations,” said CS Duale during the announcement. “This ban is crucial in ensuring our forests remain intact and are not further degraded by activities like farming and grazing.”
This restriction will apply to government-owned and public forests, including indigenous forest areas. The government is simultaneously exploring alternative livelihoods for communities historically reliant on these forests for agriculture and grazing, aiming to minimize the economic impact.
Environmental advocates have praised the move as a necessary step to curb deforestation, which has led to soil erosion, biodiversity loss, and the decline of water sources. Duale emphasized that the forest ban aligns with Kenya’s commitment to global climate goals, marking a significant effort toward a more sustainable future.
“Healthy forests are essential to our environment,” Duale stated. “This initiative will help us rebuild and sustain our natural resources for future generations.”
To enforce the new policy, the government will partner with local authorities, ensuring strict compliance while fostering community involvement in forest conservation.
