Havi to Ruto: You Can’t Win a War Against the Church
Former LSK President Nelson Havi has cautioned President William Ruto against taking on the Catholic and Anglican churches, warning such a battle would be a significant loss. “You pick a war with the Catholic and Anglican Church, you will lose terribly. These are not just religious institutions but wealthy enterprises,” he said during an interview with Citizen TV.
Havi defended Ruto’s contentious monetary contributions to churches, dismissing concerns about their source. He argued that the President’s wealth stems from his farming ventures, making such donations plausible. “The President is a man of deep pockets, not just his Ksh. 2 million salary. If I give Ksh. 5 million to a church, don’t ask silly questions,” Havi stated.
His comments follow the Archdiocese of Nairobi returning Ksh. 2.8 million donated by Ruto and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, citing governance concerns. Churches have increasingly criticized the government over alleged corruption and leadership lapses.
President Ruto, however, remains steadfast, asserting that his giving is rooted in faith. “We have no apologies to make as we give to God. It is more blessed to give than to receive,” Ruto said during a church service in Kericho.
Amid economic struggles, critics argue that the political class misuses church platforms for fundraising and influence. The escalating tension raises questions about the role of religion in governance and accountability.
