Health PS Muthoni Calls for Unity in Supporting SHA Registration Amid Criticism
Public Health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary, Mary Muthoni, has urged leaders to stop politicizing the Social Health Authority (SHA) registration process, which has faced criticism since its implementation on October 1, 2024. Speaking during the opening of a free five-day medical camp at Chepkemel Primary School, Muthoni emphasized that health matters should remain a priority for all citizens, regardless of political affiliations.
“Let the Wananchi not be sent home for lack of money. SHA is catering for everything, and we the elite know that. Let’s not play politics when it comes to health matters,” Muthoni stated. She called on community leaders to encourage Kenyans to register for the health program, which she believes will be beneficial for everyone in the future.
Muthoni also highlighted the positive impact of Community Health Promoters (CHPs), who have already reached over 22 million people through home visits, diagnosing 300,000 individuals with diabetes and referring them to health facilities for further treatment. She emphasized the crucial role CHPs play in improving health services and helping individuals who may be unaware of their health conditions.
Despite the optimistic outlook, the SHA program has faced public concerns over its efficiency, with many patients reporting issues with the medical insurance not covering their hospital bills. The government has acknowledged the challenges and committed to addressing the administrative issues that have hindered the effectiveness of the health cover.
