Jimi Wanjigi Arrested and Released on Ksh 10 Million Bond Amid Allegations of Funding Anti-Government Protests .
Businessman Jimi Wanjigi has received some good news as the high court has stopped his prosecution regarding allegations of illegal firearm possession.
This decision came after Wanjigi filed an urgent application on Monday, with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) named as a respondent.
On Tuesday, Milimani High Court Justice Bhati Mwamuye ruled in favor of former presidential candidate Jimi Wanjigi, preventing the ODPP from confiscating, retaining, or interfering with any firearms registered in his name.
The judge issued a conservatory order, effective until hearing and determination of Jimi’s application dated 19/08/2024. The orders restrains the respondents from limiting, suspending, or revoking Jimi’s firearms certificate No 9522 or from seizing any firearms or accessories registered under that certificate
The judge also issued conservatory orders that bar the respondent from initiating, filling, or continuing any criminal charges against Jimi Wanjigi related to the firearms or accessories registered under his firearms certificate.
The court further instructed the prosecution to suspend any existing criminal charges against Wanjigi concerning the firearm certificate until the case is fully heard and determined =.
The hearing of the case has been set for September 19, 2024. This ruling effectively protects Wanjigi from any legal action related to his firearms until the court reaches a final decision.
On Monday, Jimi Wanjigi was arrested by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations ( DCI ) after voluntarily presenting himself for questioning regarding his alleged involvement in financing the recent anti-government protests.
Following his arrest, Wanjigi appeared in court on Tuesday, where he was granted release on a personal bond of Kenyan shillings 10 million. As part of his bail conditions, court ordered him to surrender his passport, restricting his travel until the legal proceedings are resolved.
The court set the date for September 12 to determine whether Wanjigi will be required to enter a plea in connection with the charges.
