Matiang’i Hires Canadian Lobby Firm as He Eyes 2027 Presidency
Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has taken a significant step toward the 2027 presidential race by engaging Canadian lobbying firm Dickens & Madson. The consultancy agreement, signed on July 29, 2024, outlines the firm’s role in boosting Matiang’i’s bid for the presidency through strategic media relations and political lobbying.
Documents reveal that Matiang’i has already paid $65,000 (Ksh.8.4 million) as a down payment and will pay a $250,000 (Ksh.32.3 million) annual retainer. Dickens & Madson’s mandate includes lobbying U.S. government branches and creating informational materials to enhance Matiang’i’s image internationally.
The agreement is initially set for one year, with a possibility of renewal upon mutual consent. Despite remaining silent about his political plans since stepping back from politics in 2022 after President Uhuru Kenyatta’s departure, this move signals Matiang’i’s readiness to re-enter the political scene at a high level.
Dickens & Madson is no stranger to working with African leaders, having lobbied for figures such as Zimbabwe’s late leader Robert Mugabe and Libyan militia commander Khalifa Haftar. In 2019, the firm inked a $6 million (Ksh.774 million) deal with Sudan to improve the military regime’s global image after seizing power.
While Matiang’i has yet to officially announce his candidacy, hiring the prominent firm hints at his intention to position himself as a serious contender in the 2027 elections. This move has already begun to spark conversations about his political strategy and potential comeback.
