Nairobi Hospital Doctors Face Mistreatment, Harassment, Says KMPDU
Doctors at Nairobi Hospital are experiencing mistreatment, harassment, and job insecurity, according to the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU). During a press briefing, KMPDU Secretary-General Davji Atellah accused the hospital management of exploiting doctors’ efforts while fostering an environment of fear and intimidation.
The union highlighted that some medics had resigned due to poor working conditions, while others continue working under pressure, afraid of being targeted. KMPDU claims that hospital management is cutting medical cover under financial constraints amid reports of financial mismanagement.
“The sweat of hardworking health workers is being enjoyed by a few individuals who’ve become millionaires overnight,” Atellah stated.
KMPDU also pointed fingers at Chris Bichage, the Nairobi Hospital Board Chairperson, accusing him of orchestrating disruptions during an AGM on December 4. The union claims that hired goons infiltrated the meeting, violently confronting members who sought to impeach management to prevent the hospital’s decline.
The union is now rallying other healthcare associations and staff, urging government agencies and stakeholders to take action to protect the facility from potential closure. They have demanded the resignation of the entire board of directors, including the acting CEO.
KMPDU remains firm in its stance, warning that doctors will go on strike within seven days if their demands are not met.
