Police Teargas, Arrest Peaceful Anti-Femicide Protesters in Nairobi
Protesters advocating against the rising femicide cases in Nairobi were met with a heavy police response on Tuesday, December 10, 2024. Police officers, some appearing to be in plain clothes, used tear gas and live bullets to disperse demonstrators in the city’s central business district. Video footage shared on social media showed protesters being roughly detained, with images highlighting the injuries sustained by some of the marchers.
Rights groups have strongly condemned the authorities’ use of force. Amnesty International Kenya, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), the Human is My ID Alliance, and the End Femicide KE Movement have jointly called this incident a serious violation of human rights. Amnesty also confirmed that Irungu Houghton, the organization’s executive director for Kenya, was among those arrested during the protest.
The rights organizations emphasized that the forceful response not only violated national and international human rights laws but also sent a dangerous message to those pushing for justice and accountability. These groups argue that such actions undermine the rule of law and foster a culture of impunity that allows violence against women to persist.
Protesters are now demanding that all detained individuals be released immediately. They also want the Inspector General of Police to launch a thorough investigation into the use of excessive force against peaceful demonstrators.
Authorities are being urged to prioritize the investigation into femicide cases, ensuring that justice is served for victims and their families. Activists have called on law enforcement to respect constitutional rights and protect peaceful demonstrators rather than oppressing them.
Statistics reveal a concerning trend: over 97 women and girls were killed across Kenya in the three months leading up to October 30, as per police reports. This growing number highlights the urgent need for authorities and citizens to address gender-based violence more robustly and protect women’s rights across the nation.
