President Ruto Announces 20,000 New Teachers to Be Employed in January 2024
In a move aimed at bolstering the education sector, President William Ruto has announced that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will hire an additional 20,000 teachers starting in January 2024. Speaking during his recent address, the president highlighted that this initiative is part of his government’s broader efforts to address the nationwide teacher shortage and improve the teacher-student ratio in schools across the country.
In his speech, President Ruto emphasized that the recruitment will be open to all qualified graduates, including those completing their studies in December 2024, even if they have not participated in the internship program. This is a significant shift, as many had assumed the positions would favor interns. Ruto assured graduates that the government is keen to give equal opportunities to fresh graduates.
He said, “Next year, in January, we will employ 20,000 teachers as we continue to ensure that our education system is well-resourced and every child gets access to quality education.”
This recruitment drive is part of a larger plan to employ up to 58,000 teachers annually, a strategy introduced by the Kenya Kwanza government to bridge the 114,581-teacher gap currently facing primary and secondary schools.
The president also reiterated his administration’s commitment to reforming the education system and supporting teachers by covering the costs of Teacher Professional Development (TPD) training, a move that had previously been a financial burden on educators. Ruto stated, “We are doing everything possible to make sure our children and teachers have what they need to succeed.”
This announcement comes as welcome news to graduates and education stakeholders, as it promises to alleviate pressure in overcrowded classrooms and create more job opportunities for those entering the teaching profession.
