President Ruto Guides the Treasury Team to Engage KNUT, And TSC to Stop the Strikes of Teachers.
President William has directed and instructed the treasury to engage the lecturer’s unions and teachers and avert their looming strikes within the education sector
His excellence Ruto told the Treasury, Kenya National Union of Teachers, Teachers Service Commission, Universities Academic Staff Union and Kenya Union of Post- Primary Education Teachers to meet and get to discuss the issues that have led to continuous issuing of strike notices.
It came to the president’s concern after the UASU issued a notice to boycott their work and duties due to delay of salaries, KUPPET and KNUT also issued a notice for a strike over the implementation of the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
The President expressed the need for the treasury, TSC, and the teaching fraternity to come together and discuss how to fulfill the government’s commitments. He emphasized that this would help prevent unnecessary strikes and disruption. All these he spoke during the state concert at Eldoret city on 16th August, 2024.Deputy President Hon Rigathi Gachagua, principal secretaries, Uasin Gishu Governor Bii, MPs and others senior most leaders were available.
University Education and Fees
The president announced that the new admission letters have been sent to first-year students joining in September. These letters clearly outline the fees to be paid by the government, the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), and parents.
Music Festival and Conference in Eldoret.
A music festival, which brought together over 145,000 students from various education levels, was held in Eldoret City starting from the second week of this month. Alongside the festival, Kenya hosted its first-ever music conference.
Support for the Creative Economy and Cultural Heritage.
President Ruto emphasized the importance of the creative economy in driving economic transformation, noting that the Kenya Music Festival is a key part of this effort. He highlighted through cultural dance performances; the festivals play a significant role in preserving the nation’s heritage. Moreover, he mentioned that such platforms equip learners to compete internationally.
President Ruto also announced that Kenya is among the select few countries that will showcase its cultural heritage in Bonn, Germany, next month.
Financing and Support for Artists
The president encouraged the leadership of the Kenya music festival to find sustainable funding solutions by forming stronger partnership with the private sector. He also highlighted the government’s efforts to enhance copyright laws, ensuring that artists intellectual property rights are protected and they receive fair compensation for their work.
Additionally, the president instructed the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports to ensure that artists earn 80% of their royalties. He also raised a concern that currently, less than 20% of royalty funds reach the artists. He emphasized that these funds are meant for the artists not for running offices, purchasing cars, or paying salaries.
