President Ruto’s Surprise Move: A Courtesy Call on Uhuru to Foster Unity
President William Ruto surprised many by paying an unexpected visit to his predecessor, Uhuru Kenyatta, at his Gatundu home on December 9, 2024. The visit, aimed at addressing national and regional issues, signalled a new commitment to national unity and collaboration, moving past years of strained relations.
While speaking in Wajir Town, Ruto revealed that the visit to Uhuru was not just about diplomacy but a crucial step towards healing the nation’s tribal divisions. He called for an end to “ubaguzi”, or tribal politics, saying, “Hakuna haja ya kuendesha mambo ya ubaguzi katika Kenya, hatutaki ukabila, hatutaki migawanyiko.”
Ruto’s push for unity included discussions with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, emphasizing the importance of cooperation across political lines. He urged all Kenyans to set aside divisions, stating that collective efforts are key to building a prosperous and stable nation.
During the conversation with Uhuru, both leaders addressed pressing regional and global challenges. These included the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ukraine war, and unstable economic conditions. Nevertheless, they acknowledged significant progress in stabilizing the economy, with milestones such as lower inflation, a stronger shilling, and stabilized food prices.
Ruto praised Uhuru Kenyatta’s statesmanship during Kenya’s peaceful political transitions, highlighting the need to build a more inclusive government that includes civil society, religious groups, and other stakeholders. Together, they recognised Kenya’s regional leadership role in fostering peace across East Africa.
President Ruto’s engagement with Uhuru sends a strong message about prioritizing national unity and collaborative leadership. Whether this will unite the political landscape and strengthen cooperation across various factions remains to be seen, but it’s a bold step towards a more integrated and cooperative Kenya.
