Retire and run for a village administrator in Nyeri – Didmus Barasa Tells Gachagua
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is under increasing scrutiny as tensions escalate within the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.
Gachagua’s efforts to unite the Mt Kenya region and promote the “one-man, one vote, one-shilling” revenue-sharing formula have alienated several high-ranking members of the UDA and the broader Kenya Kwanza coalition.
Loyalists of President William Ruto have publicly and privately criticized Gachagua, accusing him of tribalism.
Among the most vocal critics is Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa, who has challenged Gachagua to relinquish his position and return to his native region for local politics.
Barasa contends that Gachagua’s focus on Mt Kenya’s interests is inappropriate given his national role.
“When given the opportunity to serve as deputy president, you will not serve one region or ethnicity; you are the deputy president of the whole of Kenya,” Barasa stated.
He suggested that if Gachagua cannot fulfill his national duties, he should consider running for local positions such as Nyeri governor or Mathira MP.
Barasa’s remarks, delivered in Sirisia, Bungoma County, on June 8, imply that Gachagua’s ascent to the deputy presidency was fortuitous.
According to Barasa, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki was the preferred choice of many Mt Kenya politicians for Ruto’s running mate in the 2022 presidential election.
A poll conducted among the leaders favored Kindiki, but Ruto ultimately selected Gachagua for reasons not disclosed.
The growing dissent within the UDA highlights the challenges facing Gachagua as he navigates his role in the national government while addressing regional concerns.
The deputy president’s ability to balance these demands will be crucial for maintaining unity within the party and the broader coalition.
