Tana River Governor and MP Arrested After Ignoring Summons Over Clan Violence
Tana River Governor Dhadho Godana and Galole MP Said Hiribae have been arrested after failing to respond to summons related to ongoing clan clashes in Tana River County. The violence, fueled by disputes over land and resources, has tragically claimed the lives of at least 14 people, prompting the government to declare several areas as “disturbed and dangerous.”
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) took action against both leaders after they did not honor earlier requests for assistance in the investigation. They were arrested on Friday and are currently being questioned at the DCI headquarters located on Kiambu Road in Nairobi. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki had previously issued a directive ordering residents in the affected regions to surrender any firearms in their possession, aiming to restore order in the escalating crisis.
The tensions in Tana River have deep historical roots, with clan rivalries often leading to violent confrontations over limited resources, such as water and land. The recent clashes have raised alarms about the potential for further violence, prompting the government to intervene decisively
Following the arrests, local residents expressed hope that the leaders’ cooperation with the investigation could pave the way for peace. “We need strong leadership to guide us through this difficult time,” said a community member. The government is under pressure to not only resolve the current violence but also address the underlying issues that lead to such conflicts.
As the investigation continues, authorities are determined to bring those responsible for the unrest to justice. Both Governor Godana and MP Hiribae are expected to face serious questions about their roles in managing the tensions within their constituencies
With ongoing investigations and community unrest, the situation in Tana River remains tense. Many hope that the government’s actions will lead to a lasting solution that fosters peace and stability in the region.
