Tragedy Strikes as 4-Storey Building Collapses in Kirinyaga, Resulting in the Loss of One Woman’s Life
A middle-aged woman died when a four-story building under construction collapsed in Karia, Kirinyaga County.
According to Edward Muriuki, the deceased’s brother-in-law, the incident occurred on Wednesday morning, while the woman and her two children were sleeping.
Neighbours rescued the two children who were sleeping in one of the rooms.
The two children were in separate rooms, but their mother’s room was near the collapsed building.
Edward Muriuki claimed her sister-in-law sold the plot of land to a Kerugoya trader who was building the collapsed structure. Her house was adjacent to the collapsed structure.
A security team, led by Kirinyaga Central police commander John Torori, arrived at the scene immediately and is waiting for the building’s owner.
A portion of the busy Embu-Meru highway was closed on Tuesday morning due to cracks in the Ikong’u bridge in Kiagima, Embu West sub-county. The soil in one section of the busy bridge began to cave in, causing a crack and forcing the road to be closed and traffic rerouted. Embu County Police Commander Nicholas Maina urged motorists on the route to follow traffic officers’ directions for alternate routes. A portion of the busy Embu-Meru highway was closed on Tuesday morning due to cracks in the Ikong’u bridge in Kiagima, Embu West sub-county. The soil in one part of the busy bridge began to cave in, resulting in a crack, forcing the road to be closed and traffic directed.
This comes as heavy rains continue to fall across the country.
The rains have caused devastation, leaving a path of destruction and loss of life. The most recent is the Mai Mahiu tragedy, in which 71 people have been confirmed dead and 28 others are missing after floods struck the area in the early hours of Monday night.
Landslides struck the Mathioya area of Murang’a, killing six people. Several other people were injured.
So far, the floods have claimed 169 lives and injured 102 people in the affected areas.
At least 30,099 households have been displaced, affecting an estimated 150,495 individuals. The flash floods in Sindo, Homa Bay County, displaced 161 households following a heavy rainfall.
