Woman Allegedly Hired Hitman to Kill City Businessman, Released on Ksh.300K Cash Bail
Winfred Wandia Kisau, a middle-aged woman accused of hiring a hitman to murder her friend’s business partner, has been released on a cash bail of Ksh.300,000 after pleading not guilty to conspiracy to commit murder.
Kisau allegedly conspired with others, who have not been charged, between July 1 and August 2024 to kill businessman Anthony Maina Mutahi. Appearing before Milimani Law Courts Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi, Kisau, represented by her lawyer, pleaded for leniency, citing her status as a single mother with a seven-year-old child.
The court granted her bail, allowing her to remain free as the case proceeds.
Kisau was first arrested on August 1, 2024, by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and subsequently booked at Central Police Station.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) stated that Winfred Wandia Kisau and businessman Anthony Maina Mutahi were involved in a legal dispute over a valuable property, which is thought to be the reason behind the alleged murder plot.
The police also revealed that two other important suspects in the case remain at large.
Mutahi was allegedly targeted for murder in July 2024, as noted in an application filed in court by an investigating officer from Central Police Station. The plan to kill him was disrupted in early August.
In his affidavit, investigating officer George Karanja listed Kisau, Rosemary Muathe, and Marvin Omondi Absalom as key players in the murder conspiracy.
In July 2023, businessman Anthony Maina Mutahi signed a lease agreement for a building in town. However, just 21 days later, another woman who had previously claimed ownership of the same building appeared, making the same claim, according to a witness.
The conflict over this property, which Mutahi aimed to acquire for Ksh. 1 billion, resulted in legal disputes. Justice M.D. Mwangi of the Environment and Lands Court directed the parties involved in the initial lease agreement to pursue arbitration to resolve the issues. Despite this, Muathe reportedly continued her actions, including breaking into the property.
“We reported this to the police at Kamukunji, and the struggle for ownership has continued. She leveraged influential contacts and various resources,” the witness added.
The police also noted that Kisau introduced Absalom to Muathe, which led to multiple meetings where they allegedly planned the execution of the murder.
